Community Involvement

We’re Taking On the Responsibility of Giving Back

You know that sweet-yet-indefinable feeling you get when you help someone? At Macy’s, you’ll have a chance to experience that often. Because we strongly believe in giving back to the communities where we live and work. It’s one of our core values. So, we’ve come up with a variety of ways to give back and pay forward. Like Partners in Time, our employee volunteer program; Corporate Giving; Cause Marketing; and more. Our point being, however you like to help people, we can help with that.

Some Stats We’re Proud Of:

  • In 2016, Macy’s, Inc. allocated more than $58 million.
  • Since the Partners in Time employee volunteerism program began in 1989, our associates have given nearly 2.7 million hours of community service to thousands of charities for a total value of nearly $51 million.
  • In 2016, more than 39,000 associates participated in more than 3,500 community projects, totaling nearly 180,000 volunteer hours.
  • Through corporate and associate giving, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s donated $11.6 million in 2016.
  • Earning for Learning (EFL) is an initiative that provides grants to schools where Macy’s, Inc. associates, their families or retirees volunteer their time for education activities such as tutoring and mentoring. In 2016, more than $20,000 and more than 2,700 hours of service were donated.
  • Macy’s, Inc. and our associates contributed food, donations and volunteer time valued at $3.1 million in 2016 through our companywide Bag Hunger campaign. This campaign helps to reduce hunger in local communities during the crucial summer months when school meal programs are not available.
  • Macy ’s customers and associates raised more than $3 million for the March of Dimes during our 2016 Shop for a Cause event. Over the last 20 years, thanks to Macy’s support, more than $25 million have been raised to support the March of Dimes efforts to fight birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

Internship Give Back Day

Summer interns come to Macy’s to learn. And here’s a fact we want every single one to absorb: giving back is vital. Which is what our National Intern Give Back initiative is all about. Every June and July, over 300 interns volunteer over 500 hours to local communities and outside organizations. And whether they’re serving up a helping of compassion at a food pantry or making an unselfish assist at a youth basketball camp, the impact is always positive, to recipient and volunteer alike.
