Community Involvement

We’re Taking On the Responsibility of Giving Back

You know that sweet-yet-indefinable feeling you get when you help someone? At Macy’s, you’ll have a chance to experience that often. Because we strongly believe in giving back to the communities where we live and work. It’s one of our core values. So, we’ve come up with a variety of ways to give back and pay forward. Like Partners in Time, our employee volunteer program; Corporate Giving; Cause Marketing; and more. Our point being, however you like to help people, we can help with that.

Some Stats We’re Proud Of:

  • In 2015, Macy’s corporate giving exceeded $72 million and 168,000 volunteer hours of community service
  • The Partners in Time employee volunteerism program began in 1989. Since then, Macy’s employees have given over 2.5 million hours of community service. That’s valued at more than $47 million to the thousands of charities who have benefited in the past 26 years.
  • In 2015, 35,000 Macy’s employees joined more than 3,700 Partners in Time service projects in communities around the country including women’s health and domestic violence, health and social services, education, arts and culture, and community development among others.
  • More than 700 United Way chapters across the United States received contributions totaling nearly $10.5 million from Macy’s, Inc. associates during 2015. Combined with nearly $2.5 million in contributions from Macy’s, Inc., our total contribution to the United Way was approximately $13 million for 2015.
  • Earning for Learning (EFL) is an initiative that provides grants to schools where Macy’s, Inc. associates, their families or retirees volunteer their time for education activities such as tutoring and mentoring. In 2014, approximately 78 grants were awarded totaling more than $22,000 through the EFL program, and EFL volunteers gave nearly 3,600 hours of service to their local schools.
  • Macy’s, Inc. associates contributed food and donations equivalent to $3.5 million in 2015 to our companywide Bag Hunger campaign to help reduce hunger in our local communities.
  • In 2015, customers contributed more than $30 million to nonprofit organizations nationwide through our signature programs such as: Believe, Go Red for Women, Got Your Six, Heart Your Park, Glamorama Fashion Shows, Pink Pony, Reading is Fundamental, Shop for a Cause and Thanks For Sharing.

Internship Give Back Day

Summer interns come to Macy’s to learn. And here’s a fact we want every single one to absorb: giving back is vital. Which is what our National Intern Give Back initiative is all about. Every June and July, over 300 interns volunteer over 500 hours to local communities and outside organizations. And whether they’re serving up a helping of compassion at a food pantry or making an unselfish assist at a youth basketball camp, the impact is always positive, to recipient and volunteer alike.
